Mashonisa accused of stabbing debtor

ALEXANDRA – Mashonisa allegedly punches and stabs man over R800 debt.

An informal money lender, commonly known as a mashonisa, was recently arrested for causing grievous bodily harm and for the attempted murder of a client.

Spokesperson for Alex Police Station, Lieutenant Allie Kodisang said the incident occurred at 4pm on 16 December last year. The victim, who was with a friend on the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 13th Avenue, alleged that the suspect approached him and demanded R800 which he owed him.

When the victim said he would pay him after receiving money also owed to him by someone else, the suspect kept quiet and sat down. After a while, the suspect stood up and punched the victim repeatedly all over his body until the friend intervened and stopped the beating.

The suspect then asked the victim to accompany him to his home, which he did. When they arrived, the suspect locked the door, punched the victim again and took a knife which he allegedly used to stab him four times in the neck, right shoulder and ribs. He also confiscated the victim’s two cellphones.

The victim was then saved by the friend and one of the suspect’s client who had arrived at the residence to pay the suspect. The extent of the victim’s injuries was not specified. The suspect will appear in court soon.
