Road closures in CBD for New Year’s Eve

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Joburg is expected to close several roads ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Several roads in Johannesburg’s city center will be closed off in preparation for New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown on Saturday, 31 December 2016.
The road closures would be conducted by the metro police department in conjunction with the police service.
The New Year’s Eve event forms part of a programme which includes the carnival in Hillbrow followed by a celebration at the Mary Fitzgerald Square.
Road Closures will be effected as follows:
Full road closure around the Mary Fitzgerald Square Precinct in Newtown
• Traffic will be diverted from 12:00 midday for the New Year’s Eve concert.
• Roads which would be closed off –
 Rahima Moosa also known as Jeppe and Miriam Makeba intersection,
 Rahima Moosa also known as Jeppe and Henry Nxumalo intersection,
 Lilian Ngoyi Street also known as Bree Street
 Helen Joseph Street also known as President Street
 Henry Nxumalo Road under the M1 flyover between Bree and Jeppe streets and Wolhuther Street also known as Margaret Mcingana.
New Year’s Eve Route Diversions M1 North and M1 South – Double Decker Highway
 From 22:00 two lane closure of M1 South
 From 23:00 – 01:00 Full Road Closure (M1 North and M1 South)
 Both Highways will be opened by 01:00
FOR VEHICLES COMING FROM M1 NORTH:
• Vehicles coming from M1 North going South will be diverted to Smit Street.
• They can then turn right into Biccard Street, which will change to Simmonds Street.
• At the corner of Simmonds and Village, those going east will slide left to join M2 East.
• Those going to the South will proceed straight and turn right at Trump Street and then left at West Street to join the M2 west.
FOR VEHICLES COMING FROM M1 SOUTH AND MAIN REEF ROAD:
• Vehicles coming from M1 South and Main Reef will be diverted to Joe Slovo Drive.
Safety and security is a main concern for the organisers of the event and there would be visible policing and crime prevention by the police and other law enforcement agencies.
