Realogile girls get special present to keep them in school

ALEXANDRA - Police led partnership brings hope to poor girls at Realogile secondary school.

Barring other unforeseen challenges, grade eight and nine girls at Realogile Secondary School coming from poor backgrounds are guaranteed to complete the rest of their school year without absenteeism

This after forty of them received sanitary pads from the Alex Police’s Women’s Network and NPO Men For Change also from the police station, Catholic church’s Radio Veritas, private company Proctor and Gamble and NPO Agisanang Domestic Abuse Prevention and Training. The donation was the second this year from the partners who intend conducting it every three months to help girls not miss out on school during their monthly menstruation. School teacher Kate Moremi said girls, especially from poor backgrounds, suffered the most by missing out on three days of learning and even examinations every month as their parents can’t afford to get the pads every time. “The support is welcome and we wish it could last forever [or] as long as poverty and the associated suffering by children persists,” Moremi said.

Thoko Mdaka, Alex Police Station’s social worker, said the girls were also supported through motivational talks that urged them not to define their destiny by their current circumstances but to aspire to be achievers. They were also advised to strive to overcome their daily challenges, past negative experiences of poverty and to desist from an early sexual debut and distractions by blessers (sugar daddies) who will only destroy their lives and dreams.

“Herbert Bokaba of Men for Change, urged the public to also donate to a cause said to be for the nation’s better future. He said the donations should be deposited in a box at the station. “With added support from the public, we will be able to support all needy, orphaned and vulnerable children in the township,” Bokaba said. Constable Given Sirema, also of Men For Change, urged schools to seek support from companies, many of which, he said, understood the social and economic challenges of township residents and were most willing to help.

Kelebogile Maleba thanked her benefactors. “The donation will ensure we don’t miss school and may your support continue,” she said in gratitude.
