MC Weiler are the new queens of Alex schools football
ALEXANDRA – MC Weiler Primary School girls team were crowned champions of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League while the boys' final had to be called off due to bad weather.
MC Weiler’s girls soccer team are the new queens of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League after winning a scintillating final of their division at the Number 3 Square Grounds.
They disposed of archrivals Iphutheng 1–0.
The goal was scored from a brilliant header by the talented Nhlanhla Mashiane in a game that was a seesaw affair and could have easily gone the other way had Iphutheng used one of the many scoring opportunities they created.
The two teams had gone into the halftime break deadlocked at 0–0. But it was the sheer brilliance of Mashiane’s header in the dying minutes of the game that led to the crowning of the new queens.

Weiler had disposed of last year’s reigning champions Dr Knak, who were beaten in the group stages of the tournament; while last year’s losing finalists, DH Carter was booted out in the semis this time around.
In one of the positional play-offs in the boys’ division to decide third and fourth place, former champions MC Weiler and last year’s losing finalists, Dr Knak laboured for a result that never came and the game ended in a 0–0 stalemate.
There was an drawn-out penalty shootout that saw both teams having to take 11 penalty kicks each before MC Weiler wrapped it all up 12–11 to take the third spot in the positional play-offs.
MC Weiler’s keeper was brilliant in the shootout, saving two penalties. His counterpart for Dr Knak saved only one while three were off target.
Weiler coach, Thabiso Vincent Maretele was pleased with the outcome. “It was a difficult match for both sides but I am happy that even after a marathon of penalty kicks, my boys emerged victoriously. We will be back next year and hopefully with a bang,” he said.
Meanwhile, the boys’ final between Skeen and Zenzeleni had to be called off due to thunderstorms. Tournament organiser Raymond Marutha said an announcement would be made soon with a new date.
The match was called off at halftime, with Skeen, who are considered as the champions-elect, leading 1–0 off the boot of the hard working midfielder, Odirile Malahlela.
It is believed that the match will carry on where it left off with Skeen leading 1–0.
