UPDATE: UJ offers condolences to family of victim

JOBURG - Condolences pour in for UJ student Kelvin Baloyi.

The University of Johannesburg recently sent out their condolences to the family of the student who was shot and killed at a private residence.

“The University of Johannesburg is saddened by the death of one of our students, Elizo (Kelvin) Baloyi, who was fatally shot in the early hours of Saturday morning allegedly by a security guard at a privately owned student accommodation where he lived.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear at the moment.  The University is working with the South African Police Services to investigate the incident which led to the untimely death of our student.  The security guard involved was not in the employ of the University of Johannesburg,” read the statement.

The University was unable to confirm that it was indeed a security guard that killed the student, however according to a report by News24, the man who shot and killed the student was not a security guard.

“The individual, unknown to Africa Housing Company, appears to have entered the property at the same time as security guards employed by SNG Security,” Africa Housing Company (owners of the building) said in a statement.

Baloyi was a first year student who was registered for BSc Computer Science and Informatics in the Faculty of Science. The University of Johannesburg Management has met with the family to express their sincere condolences.
