Pupils get head start on career options

ALEXANDRA – Council and companies reach out to pupils on career paths.

The City of Johannesburg together with several companies and State agencies reached out to Alex’s Grade 9 pupils at an inaugural career expo.

The two-day event at San Kopano Community Development Centre was attended by more than 2 000 pupils of Realogile, Pholosho, Kwa-Bhekilanga, Alex High and East Bank High schools. The MMC for Economic Development, councillor Sharon Peetz said the expo would be held annually for employers, recruiters and institutions to give career information to pupils.

“Our aim is to achieve effective engagement, participation and promote public-private partnerships, which we consider crucial in attaining our desired goals and objectives. We aim to positively influence, direct and mould the career decisions of the youth,” Peetz said.

She added that investing in and providing young people with better school education, especially at secondary school level, reduced the dropout rates, equipped them for advanced skills and post-school education, and provided employment opportunities.

She added that the expo would also expose the pupils to different career opportunities such as in aviation, the media, medicine, marketing, hospitality and the motor industry.

The Region E’s Ephraim Pooe commended the participating entities which included banks, legal firms, colleges, training and media institutions, council and student-funding entities and foundations. “They availed themselves to the children at the opportune grade and the right time when they have to think and be helped in making appropriate subject choices and informed decisions on careers they love,” Pooe said.

He added that the event would be held earlier from next year and would include Grade 12 pupils to give them advance support prior to their final matric examinations.
