Alex reeling from rape scourge

ALEXANDRA – Week's shocking rape spree in Alex.

Women’s safety in Alex was highlighted when eight cases of rape were reported at the Alex Police Station.

Alex police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said from 10 to 16 October, 27 crimes, including rape, were reported at the station.

The others were:

  • 9 residential and 2 business burglaries
  • 2 business robberies
  • 2 armed robberies
  • 4 motor vehicle thefts.

Kodisang said the rape cases included a 4th Avenue victim who was awoken when she was sleeping in her room by a man at 2am on 12 October.

The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at her and ordered her not to make a noise or he would kill her. He ordered her to dress and to follow him, which she did. He led her to the Rotary soccer fields next to Madala Hostel where he ordered her to undres and allegedly raped her without a condom. When he was done, he ordered her to get dressed, go back home and not to look back.

She informed her mother and they discovered that he had broken the room’s lock to gain entry. The suspect is unknown and police are investigating.

A 40-year-old woman of Kelvin was allegedly raped by a driver of a Toyota Avanza taxi and his companion at midnight on 10 October. Kodisang said the victim boarded the taxi and the driver proceeded to Marlboro where he parked the vehicle under some trees. He threatened and forcibly undressed her while his companion held her hands.

The two took turns in raping her without using condoms throughout the night until early morning when they left her at the scene. The victim walked back to her home and was taken by colleagues to a clinic before reporting the crime at the Alex Police Station. The suspects could be identified if seen.

At 8am on 10 October, a woman of 2nd Avenue was allegedly raped by her boyfriend after he had told her that their relationship was over as he gone back to his former girlfriend with whom he had a child. The suspect invited the victim to his home to tell her of the separation.

She walked out crying but he forced her back into his room and allegedly raped her without a condom. The victim reported the crime at the Alexandra Police Station.

A woman of a 12th Avenue block of flats was allegedly raped on 9 October by a known suspect residing in another flat in the same building. The victim went to the suspect’s flat at 8pm and when she wanted to leave, he refused, telling her that it was late and locked the door. The suspect told her that she must sleep with him so that he could marry her. When she refused, he allegedly undressed and forced her to do the same. When she refused he assaulted her before allegedly raping her. She escaped after he had left the door open and she went to report the incident at the Alexandra Police Station.
