Books and Biscuits on tomorrow

ALEXANDRA - The 'Books and Biscuits' literacy programme for creche and primary schools is on tomorrow.

The Khulula Foundation, which is in the process of establishing a world class school in Alexandra to be completed in 2015, will run its Books and Biscuits storytelling hour at the Sankopano Library tomorrow, 26 July.

During the Books and Biscuits programme, crèche and primary school children gather in a circle and listen to a dramatic reading of a story, and then engage in literacy activities with members of the foundation.

The programme starts from 3pm to 4pm at the library. “Children love learning and being entertained,” said project co-ordinator Zanele Mabaso of the foundation.

“We try our utmost best to ensure that after Books and Biscuits children are able to create a memory of the story and we encourage them to share their thoughts with their families when they get home.

Stories serve as wonderful tools that help to develop literacy skills and provide children with valuable lessons that contribute to their personal growth and development.

“Currently, the founders of the school, American Waahida Tolbert-Mbatha and her husband, Alexandra-born Thulani Mbatha, are working on the finer details of establishing the school.

Tolbert-Mbatha is in Chicago in the USA on a sabbatical to learn the ropes of running and administering a private school, and also to raise funds for the school project.

The Khulula Foundation is an international non-profit organisation and aims to develop a powerful cadre of change agents from low-income communities in South Africa, with a particular focus on Alexandra.
