Kgololo ignites spark for science in its children

ALEXANDRA – Kgololo Academy prepares its children for varsity and understanding science.

Kgololo Academy is living true to its motto of being a world-class school in the impoverished community of Alexandra and has introduced science to its pupils.

The school invited the Nutty Scientists to come and dazzle its Grade R and 1 pupils with a sizzling performance of various experiments conducted in an interactive and edutainment format.

Dazzle is what Professor Kota, whose real name is Craig Khumalo, did with his witty experiments which also use the children as guinea pigs so that they, too, are actually and physically involved in the experiments.

Based in Bryanston and owned by Kevin Koz, Nutty Scientists is a group which moves from school to school with its experiments designed for children between the ages of four and 14.

Besides visiting schools, Koz said the group also takes its scientific shows to underprivileged schools as a way of stimulating the pupils’ love of science in those schools and to debunk the myth that science is a difficult subject.

He said the group’s motto is ‘What I hear, I forget; what I see, I remember; and what I do, I understand’.

The school’s recruitment and development specialist, Ofentse Mokobodi, said the show was first spotted by school founder, Waahida Tolbert-Mbatha at the Rand Easter Show, and said, “We decided to bring it to our school as a way to ignite the spark and passion for science in our children at an early age.” Mokobodi added that if the children interact with scientific experiments at a tender age, they grow up with experiments in their blood.

“We’re already preparing our children for varsity by exposing them to science and experiments early on.”
