Habitual criminal faces car theft charge

ALEXANDRA - Serial criminal remanded in custody for alleged motor vehicle theft.

A 23-year-old suspect from Rabie Ridge, whose criminal activities started when he was 18 years old, has been remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The suspect was detained for an alleged motor vehicle theft pending further investigation.

Police patrolling in Alex arrested the suspect at midnight on 22 June after they found him with another person in a reported stolen company vehicle parked on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Rooth Street. When the officers stopped behind the vehicle, the accused’s companion exited the vehicle and ran away and the suspect was arrested.

Investigations revealed his previous criminal record which includes a robbery in Tembisa in 2011, for which he received a suspended sentence; trespassing in Hillbrow in 2014, for which he received another suspended sentence or a R6 000 fine; and theft in Alex last year for which he also received a suspended sentence or R3 000 fine.
