Boston students to the rescue of Alex home

ALEXANDRA – Boston Media House students in Sandton deliver goodies and a cheque of R10 000 to Leratong Joy For One home in Alex.

Boston Media House public relations students donated R10 000 to Leratong Joy for One home on the corner of 12th Avenue and Alfred Nzo Street in Alex.

The third-year students from the Sandton-based college formed what they call Team Inspire 22, which is all about helping the less-fortunate of the communities. They gathered for their official charity handover event and to fulfil a promise they made, not only to themselves but to the lives of 22 children at the home, which was founded many years back by Mama Peggy Chauke.

The home houses abandoned and abused children who are also affected and infected by HIV/Aids.

Team Inspire 22, named after the 22 children housed at Leratong, raised the money through holding class and campus activations, soccer tournaments, a market day, a talent show and various other fundraising activities.

The students arrived at the home, carrying food parcels, blankets and other amazing treats, along with a giant cheque for R10 000. “It has been an amazing journey. We are giving back and inspiring 22 precious lives, and I’m so emotional and filled with pride,” said Amanda Hlala, a member of Team Inspire 22.

Frank Chauke, co-founder of the charity, accepted the donations and said, “I speak on behalf of all of us when I say, we never expected this. What the students of Boston Media House have done for us is beyond me. Thank you for lending a helping hand to your fellow South Africans. Words fail me.”

Thato Mokgotlo, a child sheltered at the home responded, “Thank you for inspiring us, you have given us hope. We have never received something so special from young people.

“And thank you for the time you spent with us on your past visits, and thank you for giving us the one thing we wanted the most – love. I hope this doesn’t end here.”

Agather Maluleke, a member of Team Inspire 22 concluded, “This started off as something we were tasked to do by our lecturer, Claire Jackson-Bernardo, but from our first visit, we knew we had to do more.

“Our goal was to give magic to the children of Leratong and to let them know that they matter and they are important to us.”

The handover event culminated in a braai, drinks and snacks. To add more fun, the team separated into groups and played different games and sang and danced with the children well into the afternoon.
