WATCH: Dbn Nyts, the roses that grew from concrete

JOBURG – From humble beginnings to being national stars, the rise of Dbn Nyts.....

From hustling in the dusty streets of Yeoville to make ends meet, to the glitz and glamour of the South African music scene, five-member kwaito-fusion music group, Dbn Nyts, has taken the music industry by storm.

This follows the success of their breakthrough single Shumaya, featuring Trademark and Idols 2012 Top 16 finalist Zinhle Ngidi, which was played on the airwaves countrywide and received more than four million downloads.

The group consists of Cebe Ngcobo, Samkele Maphumulo, Lwazi Yokwana, Kabelo Pekile and Wanda Shabalala.

After many years of struggling to get a breakthrough, they are now signed to Kalawa Jazmee, one of South Africa’s oldest, black-owned record labels.

According to the group, co-founder of Kalawa Jazmee, Oscar Bonginkosi Mdlongwa, popularly known as Oskido, went looking for them in Yeoville after hearing their now hit song, Shumaya.

“We basically ran away from home [Durban] to come to Johannesburg and pursue our dream, which is something not a lot of people have done,” said Shabalala.

Before the life-changing moment of signing to Kalawe Jazmee, the group recalls being snubbed by various people and record labels. “Signing with Kalawa changed our lives. We bought ourselves cars and some of us bought houses for our parents,” said Shabalala.

Shumaya earned the group three South African Music Awards for Best Collaboration, Highest Radio Airplay of the Year and Highest Radio Airplay Composers’ Award.

Following the success of the hit single, the group has recently released a new song, Bless Me. The song is about how the group has been blessed financially and pays homage to their success.

“We are very grateful to all our fans and Kalawa Jazmee for their unwavering support and we look forward to giving the country more great music,” said Ngcobo.

With various projects and plans lined up for the rest of the year, which include major collaborations with some of the big guns in the industry, the group is definitely destined for stardom.
