City council hosts 16 June dialogues

JOBURG – Dialogues to assist the current generation to understand how on 16 June, 1976, schoolchildren's protests shaped the history of today's democratic South Africa.

The City of Johannesburg is holding intergenerational dialogues leading to the 40th year commemoration of the iconic 16 June Soweto uprising now known as Youth Day.

The series started on 15 May at the Soweto Theatre and will be held at various venues to be announced up to the end of June.

In a statement, the City said the dialogues were to assist the current generation to understand how on 16 June, 1976, schoolchildren’s protests shaped the history of today’s democratic South Africa, and the significance for them to guard this memory.

Panelists, including some of the organisers of the 1976 march and those who went into exile during that time, will contribute to the discussions. Nonceba Molwele, MMC for Health and Social Development said the ultimate aim of the events was to safeguard memories of the past and to inspire the current generation to fully understand the ultimate price paid by many before them whose experiences will remain unknown, despite contributing in getting this country to where it is today.
