ORT SA launches IT academy

JOBURG - Educational non-governmental organisation, ORT SA, which implements extensive educational programmes in Alex schools, is strengthening its position as a leader in technology education in South Africa.

ORT SA chief executive officer, Ariellah Rosenberg, said their Johannesburg offices have recently undergone extensions and renovations to accommodate the academy, thanks to a generous donation by Eric and Sheila Samson, owners of Mendel Kaplan.

This will allow ORT SA to extend its impact on upskilling South Africans, making them employable, with an emphasis on 21st century skills, which are now required for future careers.

The ORT SA Academy will soon be launched and will include a STEM Academy (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) offering seminars, courses and lectures with a view to future career choices.

The Skills and Enterprise Academy will cater for accredited small business training, including mentoring; while an IT Academy will offer end-user computer qualifications, robotics and coding. Bridging programmes in technology will also be offered, which could lead to careers in IT.

According to the World Economic Forum Report on the future of jobs in the country, this fourth industrial revolution, together with socioeconomic and demographic factors is impacting the labour market across the globe, resulting in the creation of new categories of jobs.

This affects the skills set required for a digital world and will transform how and where people work.

“The ORT SA Academy aims to meet these skills by bridging the unemployment and skills gap,” Rosenberg said.
