Alex folk take first steps to financial freedom

ALEXANDRA - The 2016 ORT SA free Business Enterprise Development programme started in Alexandra this week with a solemn commitment to this year’s course by the 30 participants.

The 2016 ORT SA Business Enterprise Development Programme commenced last week in Alex with a solemn commitment to this year’s course by the 30 participants.

This free course, sponsored by Absa Bank, is facilitated by ORT SA trainers and is based on the new venture creation model for which the organisation is Seta accredited. It is aimed at small business owners and entrepreneurs who need assistance with their start-ups.

“The course covers basic business skills such as marketing, business etiquette and financial management, among others, and is a practical course which seeks to equip participants with the necessary skills to run a small business,” said ORT SA communications and marketing manager, Marcelle Ravid.

She added that the course was a key tool to financial independence which was in line with the organisation’s mission, to build the spirit of self-reliance among township residents.

Ravid said participating businesses range from construction to carpentry and catering and one such example is Joyce Saomolo’s construction company, which is a co-operative of five senior citizens working together.

Thami Ndlangamandla, who registered his security company said: “I am always looking for new business. With ORT SA, I will be able to market myself better.”

Saomolo and Ndlangamandla’s businesses operate in and around the greater Alexandra area, which includes Wynberg, Kew, Marlboro and Bramley.

Ravid said there were still some places available for anyone who fits the criteria and would like to start the walk to financial freedom.
