Birds loss is Hungary’s gain

ALEXANDRA - Bluebirds Ladies Football Club is caught between the rock and a hard place following the departure of their key shot stopper for pastures green in Europe.

Bluebirds Ladies Football Club is both happy and sad following the departure of their key shot stopper for pastures greener in Europe.

The move by Asa Rabalao to a Hungarian side on a year-and-half contract comes hot on the heels of another departure by a second key member of the team, Zingawe Phakathi, who is still mapping out a direction for her football career as she negotiates with various teams in a bid to find a new home.

Rabalao is scheduled to leave for Gyor to join Gyor Eto which plies its trade in the Hungarian Premier League.

“While we’re all happy in the team for Asa’s career development and the glory it brings to our brand, we’re however saddened by her departure as we stand to lose another key member of the team. This may impact negatively on our mission and campaign in the Sasol League, which is to start challenging for league honours,” coach Malvin Khumalo said in his reaction to the news of Rabalao’s pending departure.

When the league season starts this year, the Birds were hoping to up their game and mount what Khumalo described as a serious challenge for the league championship which has been dominated for many years by Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and Thembisa’s Falcon Super Eagles.

“Our maiden season and the one that followed thereafter were mainly structured to ensure we retain our status while getting to understand and adapt to our new environment, and at the same time building a formidable team that can stand its own ground and mount a serious challenge for league honours,” said Khumalo.
