Sandtonview’s best 2015 pupil enrols at Stellenbosch Uni

ALEXANDRA - Sandtonview High School's 2015 best matric results achiever, Nokuthaba Moyo, who achieved five distinctions last year, enrolled at Stellenbosch University to begin her civil engineering studies.

Moyo obtained distinctions in maths, physical science, life sciences, geography and life orientation.

“This derived from self-motivation and a study group she [started] for friends who also excelled in their own way from a mutual commitment to the group,” said Ronald Moyo, her father and also an English teacher at the school.

Moyo said his daughter was top of her class starting from Grade 1 while still in Zimbabwe. She even passed Afrikaans with 59 percent, a subject she only began to learn in Grade 6.

“Had it not been for the bursary condition limiting her to do civil engineering, she could have enrolled for aeronautical engineering to break the stranglehold of males in the airspace industry,” Moyo added.

He also stated that Nokuthaba’s commitment to schoolwork and to help others emulated her brother, a biology and maths honours graduate who offers voluntary tutoring sessions to matric students through a radio programme in Mahikeng, North West.

Deputy principal, Kogie Nair said they expect Nokuthaba’s achievement to motivate this year’s matric class which is challenged to achieve a 100 percent matric pass rate.

“They have support from companies which provide voluntary tutorials in physical science and maths on weekends and holidays and others are considering to adopt other subjects,” Nair said.
