UPDATE: Poisoned children buried at Waterval Cemetery, father in Zim

ALEXANDRA - Two siblings Simphiwe (6) and Nkosinathi Mqgibelo (2) who died 25 January with their father Mthulisi Nkomo (39) from food he poisoned at their Extension 7 home, were buried at Waterval Cemetery on 3 February.

Their sister Nonhlanhla (9) survived the ordeal and is still receiving treatment at Edenvale Hospital. The mother, Sindi Mqgibelo was reported to have been absent at the time due to a soured relationship with the father.

Nkomo, was taken home to Zimbabwe for burial.

A distraught Salamina Mashego who is a ward committee member said she fed and cared for the children at her drop-in centre hours before the poisoning. Speaking at the funeral, she pleaded with couples in difficult marriages and relationships not to resort to similar measures.

Other speakers said the burial would bring closure to the tragic and unwarranted deaths of the children. They also urged those in troubled relationships to seek help.

Teachers of Zenzeleni Primary School where Nonhlanhla and Simphiwe attended said the incident had traumatised their classmates.
