Schools prepare for inter-district athletics
ALEXANDRA - Its athletics season and schools have joined in on the fun and competition.
It’s athletics season and local schools have joined in on the fitness fun.
Primary and secondary schools in the Joburg East District recently competed in running races in readiness for an inter-district athletics competition which will be held in Germiston later this month.
Selected pupils from five secondary schools in Alex competed in elimination heats at the Eastbank Athletics and Rugby Fields for the final selection, while their counterparts from Sandtonview High School did the same at their school.
Sophie Rambau, sports co-ordinator for schools in Alex, said athletics competitions were part of the school curriculum and helped keep the children mentally and physically fit, and also off the streets.
“Some could adopt athletics as a career which, if well managed, could be lucrative to them,” Rambau added.
