Ex-con charged with robbery and housebreaking

ALEXANDRA - A repeat offender was denied bail by the Alex Magistrates' Court this time, for a case of housebreaking and robbery he allegedly committed in November last year.

The Alex Magistrates’ Court denied bail to a repeat offender who used difference aliases, for a case of housebreaking and robbery he committed in October last year.

The accused, will reappear in court once the investigation is completed. The court heard about his previous jail terms of six months for theft committed in 1996 when he was using the name Edward Ngwenya and a three-year jail term for robbery in 2002 when he went by the name of George Ngwenya.

On 16 November last year, the accused allegedly broke into the home of an elderly woman who he had on 30 October, assisted in the transport of her son’s property from Emmarentia to the woman’s home in Buccleuch. A neighbour who had seen the accused two days after the robbery on a nearby street selling clothes, curtains, blankets and other items identical to the stolen items, alerted the woman.

The following day, the neighbour and the complainant reported the accused to the police who arrested him. At the time of his arrest, he was wearing some of the clothes which allegedly belonged to the woman’s son.
