Bidvest Wits starts the season with a bang

JOBURG - Bidvest Wits Football Club continued to put their foot on the gas in the recent Absa Premiership after thrashing Jomo Cosmos 3-1 and took the honours for the first quarter of the season.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chief executive, Brand de Villiers heaped praise on the top-of-the-log premiership side after they were crowned as the Absa Premiership Q-Innovation Quarter One (Q1) winners.

The win against Cosmos parachuted the Clever Boys, as Wits is known, to the top of the Q1 log ahead of Platinum Stars and Mpumalanga Black Aces.

Wits, which has 19 points from eight games, will now take home R1.5 million in prize money.

De Villiers said, “It is through their consistency in the Absa Premiership that Wits has been able to win Q1. They played good football and this accolade is well deserved.

“By all indications, we are in for an interesting season in the Absa Premiership, especially in the championship race. We have many clubs that have already raised their hands this season through an impressive start. This is good for our league and also for supporters.”

This is the first time that Bidvest Wits has won the Q1 award since its inception in the 2012/13 season.
