Three men bust for house robbery

MARLBORO GARDENS – The Alexandra Magistrates' Court recently remanded three men in custody pending further investigation on a charge of house robbery.

The men are alleged to have been part of a gang of five, with two suspects still at large.

The court heard that at about 9.15am on 3 November, the gang allegedly robbed a Marlboro Gardens family of R7 000 and four cellphones, all of which were recovered after the incident.

The gang is said to have been wearing reflector jackets and allegedly approached the homeowner as he was returning to his car parked outside the house. It is alleged that one of the gang members pointed a firearm at him and demanded the car keys, which he allegedly refused to hand over.

The gang then allegedly forced him into the house where he and his wife were made to lie down in the passageway.

Their daughter, who witnessed the incident from another room, called the police. The police arrived within minutes and the gang attempted to flee while removing their reflector jackets, however, two of them were apprehended in the house. Two cellphones, money and a loaded firearm were found in their possession. One of them is said to have stated that the gun had been hired from someone whose name he did not disclose.

The third gang member was caught some distance from the house when other police officers, also responding to the crime scene, saw him running in their direction. He was searched and two more cellphones were found in his possession. He is said to have confessed to being part of the gang. The recovered items were returned to the owners and the firearm was taken for ballistic testing.

Police are looking for the two suspects who evaded arrest.
