MC Weiler and Dr Knak through to Discovery finals

New kid on the block, MC Weiler and perennial force of Alex Primary School’s football, Dr Knak are through to the finals of the Discovery Alex Schools League.

They will collide in the exciting final on 11 November at the No 3 Square Grounds after they disposed of their opponents in the semi-finals of the tournament on 4 November at the same ground.

Dr Knak showed their football pedigree when they dealt a heavy blow to a team that emerged as the best overall winners of the group stages of the competition, Zenzelelni Primary School, which amassed a massive 14 points from five games.

Zenzeleni’s nearest rivals on points were MC Weiler, Dr Knak and Iphutheng primary schools which were all tied on 11 points apiece from five games, although Iphutheng was in the Zenzeleni group.

To reach the finals, Dr Knak beat Zenzeleni 2-0 while MC Weiler had to overcome two-time champions of the tournament, Iphutheng, through sudden death penalties after both teams ended goalless in regulation time.

MC Weiler scored three of its penalties, only missing one, while Iphutheng scored two and the other two were saved by the keeper, including a lame shot from the star of the Iphutheng team, Joseph ‘Messi’ Maphuruma.

Iphutheng crashed out of the tournament after being beaten 3-2 in the sudden death penalty kicks, sending a frenzy of celebrations from the MC Weiler schoolchildren and their teachers alike.

The Weiler-Iphutheng match was a see-saw game of two halves, the first belonging to the Weiler boys who put a lot of pressure on their opponents in search of an early goal to unsettle them.

When play resumed in the second half, a team pep talk must have worked wonders as Iphutheng turned the tables and asked the most questions on the Weiler keeper but, like their counterparts in the first half, could not find the back of the net.

Meanwhile, of the 12 primary schools in the township, Carter relegated Ekukhanyisweni to the tail end of the soccer stakes with 6-5 goals in the sudden death penalty kicks of the positional play-offs.

Carter took position 11 from the penalty kicks after the teams were tied 1-1 in regulation time while Emfundisweni took position 10 after being thrashed by Gordon 1-0 for position nine.

Other positional play-offs will be held on 10 November at the No 3 Square Grounds, and will be completed just before the final of the tournament on 11 November.
