Guard in court for business robbery

ALEXANDRA – A former security guard was granted bail after a robbery at his former work place.

A former security guard at a Midrand-based technology company was granted bail by the Alexandra Magistrate Court for robbery at his former workplace.

He will re-appear in court after further investigation is completed. The court heard that in September, the man, who was on duty with another guard, conspired with other men to rob the company.

His accomplices allegedly entered the company premises after closing hours in a truck and minibus. When inside, the gang, including the guard, were captured on video footage loading 12 computers, hard drives, memory cards and other computer items – all to the value of R2 million – into the vehicles. The footage is said to have also shown the guard allegedly putting a memory card in his pocket.

When the other guard caught them in the act, they allegedly tied him up and bundled him into one of the cars. The gang then drove off and dropped the other guard in an isolated area in Midrand.

The robbery was reported to the police the following morning. Police investigations led them to the guard’s home in Garsfontein where he was arrested and a memory card was recovered. The other items were not found and his co-accused are still at large.

The other guard was rescued by passersby.
