Suspected hijackers nabbed after high-speed chase

ALEXANDRA - Three men, suspected to be hijackers or robbers, were arrested by police after the vehicle they were driving in was involved in an accident in Alexandra.

Eyewitnesses said the men were fleeing from police when the incident occurred along Florence Maphosho Avenue in Eastbank just before crossing the Jukskei river into Alexandra. The witnesses said the vehicle hit a road hump at high speed which made them veer off the road, damaging the underside and rendering it undrivable.

Among the witnesses was councillor Shadrack Mkhonto who said after that, the three, who are alleged to have been in police uniform, fled the scene into neighbouring houses. They are alleged to have removed the uniforms while in full flight.

In the process, there was also an exchange of gunfire but no one was injured.

Residents are said to have assisted the police by pointing out the men’s hideout and the officers where able to arrest all three. One suspect sustained minor injuries thought to be from the accident.

Paramedics were called and treated the injured suspect before the trio were taken to police cells, awaiting further investigation and a court appearance.

Councillor Mkhonto also said he heard other witnesses say the men were suspected to have been part of a gang that had hijacked a truck. Police had not confirmed this allegation by the time of publication.
