Sneakers 4 Change hosts year-end charity drive

JOBURG - Sneakers 4 Change, a local charity organisation, is at it again and they're hosting their end-of-year charity drive at Constitution Hill.

The organisation, which collects sneakers from the public and donates them to a number of selected beneficiaries, will host their next collection drive at Constitution Hill on 29 November.

The initiative was started by Sibusiso Zulu, who thought he’d collect just 20 pairs of shoes and donate them to a home in need.

“I started the initiative with my business partners from Odd Generation. I was inspired by the fast-growing sneaker culture worldwide and in South Africa, and I wanted to promote the sneaker culture and also educate and introduce the culture to my community by showcasing the opportunities in the industry,” Zulu said.

After his target was far exceeded, he continued to encourage shoe donations by placing collecting bins around Johannesburg.

At the upcoming charity drive there will be a number of poetry performers at the event such as Ruby Gold, M-kay Mkh1ze and Pharaoh, among others; in addition to a number of DJs who will spin the decks for guests.

There will also be a fashion event where guests can donate money towards their favourite item and 50 percent of that will be donated to the nominated beneficiaries.

The home set to receive the donations from the event is Twilight Children’s home based in Hillbrow, which is situated on the outskirts of Johannesburg CBD. They provide foster care for homeless orphans from all areas around Johannesburg. Sneakers 4 Change has chosen to collect and donate sneakers to the home in an attempt to reduce the financial burden on the homeowners and caregivers.

The charity drive will take place from 11am to 10pm and entrance to the event is R50 or a donation of a pair of sneakers.
