Food truck takes advantage of EcoMobility Festival

Hawa Rawat, the owner of the food truck business said she applied via the EcoMobility Festival website to obtain a permit to sell food along West Street in Sandton. The Kelvin resident explained that it took about a month for the permit to be approved by the City of Johannesburg and she will only sell food along West Street for the duration of the festival.

Rawat said the process to obtain her permit was not easy and she believes many others tried to apply, but gave up as the process was taxing.

Epic Eats is one of the few food truck businesses that have taken advantage of the EcoMobility Festival. Rawat said more food trucks join her on the streets over the weekends but during the week she’s the only one operating on West Street.

She has received support from employees who work in the area and pedestrians passing by her truck.

“On any other day, people who work in the area would have had to go into Sandton City for food, but now they can just walk out of their office and there is food being served,” explained Rawat.

On sale are chicken and beef tacos, curry, fried chips, sandwiches, boerewors rolls and beef baguettes. “Office people eat light foods so I make sure I have salads for them as well,” added Rawat.

Rawat said she prepares most of the food at home and finishes it off in the food truck. Her busiest times are between midday and 1.30pm.
