Youth urged to register for jobs and training

ALEXANDRA - Alex youths have been implored to empower themselves through the free skills empowerment services offered by Vulundle’e JOZI initiative.

Alex youths have been implored to empower themselves through the free skills empowerment services offered by the Vulindlele Jozi initiative.

This was said at Sankopano Community Centre by officials of the initiative, a partnership between the Joburg City Council and Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator. The initiative is designed to break down barriers to opportunities for young people through access to skills training, employment and entrepreneurship development.

Like many townships, Alex’s predominantly youthful population roams the streets, seemingly aimless, resulting in some drifting to crime and others getting despondent and no longer looking for opportunities after several failed attempts.

Mduduzi Mahlangu of the initiative which is run by the youth, said they targeted other unemployed South African youth in the 18 to 35 year age group who were hungry for opportunities and who have not had permanent employment for more than 12 months.

The opportunities he said include the following:

  • Formal employment in companies of all sizes
  • Small, medium and micro enterprise development
  • Work experience programmes
  • Basic numeracy, literacy and skills development programmes.

Mahlangu said they moved around the townships registering and conducting presentations to the youth on these opportunities. “We aim to register and brief 150 youths every time and urge the Alex youth to look out for public media notifications for our next registration and briefing which will be in the next two week,’ he concluded.

Youths are also encouraged to register through www.vulindelejozi.mobi
