VIDEO: Musicians dazzle the crowd at Sacred Heart Music Fest

JOBURG - AS PART of the ongoing advocacy to combat xenophobia, Sacred Heart College hosted its second edition of the Sacred Heart Music Festival showcasing the rich melodic sounds of iconic South African musicians.

The festival is an initiative to raise funds to provide refugee children access to a quality education.

The fest saw some of the best local artists take to the stage to dazzle the crowd. The line-up included the legendary Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Judith Sephuma, Simphiwe Dana and two of South Africa’s best DJs, Fresh and Euphonik.

“This is the second year that we ran the event. The idea in the first year was to celebrate our families and our heritage. This year, with all the terrible attacks that have happened against refugees in our country, we decided that raising awareness on xenophobia would be the message of our festival,” said Colin Northmore, head of the college.

Northmore encouraged people to unite and embrace each other’s diversity, saying we are all Africans. “I am hoping that on a day like this we can share our common humanity and we can come together and enjoy each other’s company.

“I am hoping that more people can join us to get to see what a wonderful opportunity exists when we celebrate the diversity that is South Africa.”

Northmore said if South Africans accept that they are a diverse nation, then the diversity others bring will enrich the country.

The proceeds from the festival will benefit the Three2Six Refugee Project, which provides a bridging educational programme for Grade R to Grade 6 refugee children who have been denied access to public education.

There was entertainment for all ages including a beer tent, a kiddies entertainment area with a jumping castle, face painting, and a game van with many other activities.
