Wits Theatre and Wits School of Arts, in partnership with The Market Theatre, presents a scintillating performance of Vumani Oedipus – an Africanisation of the classic murder mystery.
The performance will be directed by Wits lecturer Samuel Ravengai who has Africanised the Athenian tragedy, Oedipus Rex, situating the original play within a fictional country called Nguniland.
The play explores a man’s attempt to escape his awful destiny foretold at his birth by a sangoma.
Vumani Oedipus was created by, and features, students and a lecturer of Wits School of the Arts, as well as actors from the Market Theatre Laboratory. The set was designed by Claudia Hansen.
Vumani Oedipus opens at the Market Theatre’s Barney Simon Theatre on 6 October at 8.15pm and runs until 11 October.
Shows are at 8.15pm, except for 10 October (at 2pm and 8.15pm) and 11 October (at 3.15pm).
Tickets are available online at R60, while at the door, tickets will be sold for R65. Students and pensioners pay R45 online and R50 at the door.
On Thursday 8 October the performance will cost R10.
