Student sex video concerns councillor

ALEXANDRA - A pornographic video said to be of Alex students and suspected to be circulating has been condemned by a community leader.

A pornographic video, said to be of Alex students and suspected to be circulating among their peers, has been condemned by a community leader.

This after Gauteng police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit arrested a 20-year-old computer science student from a Johannesburg university for the possession of child pornography. The case has been linked to an international child pornography ring.

The Alex video, said to have been shot during school hours last week and viewed by this reporter, was filmed in a room at an unknown location. It shows a youthful male and a female engaged in explicit sex on a bed with an item of clothing on the floor next to them which looks like a local secondary school uniform, while an animated voice can be heard in the background saying the clip would be posted on Facebook.

Expressing shock, Ward 116 councillor Monde Mbingeleli, who also saw the clip, said he was concerned after being told that those featured in it were students at a local secondary school. He claimed it was filmed during school hours. The councillor is also worried that the clip could be seen by underage children.

Mbingeleli said besides the need for decency, technology shouldn’t be abused but used to advance students’ learning.

“It’s an indictment on our moral values, especially parents who renege on their parental responsibilities to ensure children were at all times… learning in class. It shows a lack of guidance from the home and community at a time when children should be encouraged to be at school and preparing for their final examinations,” Mbingeleli said.

Earlier this year, the Department of Basic Education revealed that thousands of school children fell pregnant annually, risking unwanted pregnancies, HIV and the loss of opportunities to improve their lives through education. Also, in this paper’s article, Teen pregnancy week ending 29 August 2014, the Alex Clinic said they were inundated with cases of teenagers and schoolchildren wanting help after botched abortions performed at illegal backyard clinics.

This despite life orientation classes at schools which teaches children self-preservation and self-esteem skills, with emphasis on the risk of pregnancy and ill-health from an early sexual debut.
