Gang rapists await sentencing

ALEXANDRA - Three Alex men have been detained in police custody by the Alexandra Magistrate Court pending sentencing for gang raping a woman.

Three men from Alexandra have been found guilty of gang raping a woman and remain in police custody pending sentencing.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the men, aged between 20 and 24 years, raped a woman on 29 August at about 6.30pm at Eastbank Park.

Maphakela said the woman was walking alone through the park from Alex to Eastbank when the suspects grabbed her and took turns in raping her. They then let her go and she ran away. The victim assisted the police to apprehend the suspects the following day after seeing them in the area.

Maphakela warned the public, especially women, not to walk in parks at night to avoid being raped and he also urged the public to avoid walking in dark and secluded spots. He advised those who saw men in groups acting suspiciously to contact the police who would then go to the area to search and interrogate them.

The men will appear in court next week.
