So near, yet so far for Alex Ladies football team (VIDEO)

ALEXANDRA - Alexandra Ladies football team ruined their missed opportunities as they lost on penalties to Silver Spear in the ladies final of the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games.

Alexandra Ladies Football Club rued their missed opportunity as they lost on penalties to Silver Spears in the ladies final of the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games.

The game saw both sides creating no clear-cut chances in the beginning as they were still settling their nerves. Mataya Kedibone produced a few brilliant touches as the crowd got behind the ladies, but the halftime break saw both sides without any goals.

Alex Ladies settled down and dominated much of the play in the second half, but had nothing to show for their possession. Jane Mnisi headed home following a great cross from the left for Alex ladies, as they came out guns blazing in the second stanza of the game, and their persistence paid off.

The introduction of Lerato Matsitela into the Alex Ladies’ team made an immediate impact as she played a lovely pass through the Spears’ defence. When the game looked to be over and Alex Ladies thought they had it in the bag, Mmpula Monyepao scored a goal and Spears got back into the game.

Neither team managed to score thereafter and had to go to penalties to decide the winners. Alex Ladies only scored one of their four penalties and were beaten 3-1 in the penalty shootout.

“We did our best today, but it was not our day. We created numerous opportunities, but we could not convert them. Penalties is a win or lose game, and credit should go to the ladies as they played well,” said Sammy Modiba, Alex Ladies coach.
