A house will be built in 67 minutes

JOBURG - Community radio station Hot 91.9 FM has announced its Mandela Day initiative, and believe it or not, they plan to build a house in 67 minutes.

The show’s regular charity activation, ONE Wingz of Change, has partnered up with emergency services company, ER24, and will build the house for someone who doesn’t have a permanent home.

To get everything they need for the project, radio hosts Jeremy Mansfield and Darren Scott will open the phone lines for 67 minutes at 7am on 17 July, in the hopes that companies, industry stakeholders and members of the community will come on board and pledge their support, materials and skills.

“We will have our architect virtually building the house online for listeners to follow as each contribution comes in,” Scott revealed.

Local actress Hayley Owen is heading up the project, as she is not only the face of ONE Wingz of Change, but is also a board member of this non-profit initiative. The initiative aims to make positive changes in people’s lives at least twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays as part of the station’s breakfast show.

Mandela Day is an important day for South Africans, and should be for the rest of the world. “Touching the lives of someone else in our country, particularly someone who doesn’t know you, and you don’t know him,” said Scott.

“That person who has no means or hope … to be able to change their lives for the better.”

Scott added that this was the kind of spirit that Mandela represented. “He would approach the most unlikely… people in our country and make them feel good about themselves, their lives, their country, and restore faith in their fellow human beings.”

Donations or services for the project can be pledged by calling in to the radio show on the morning of 17 July during the 67 minutes after 7am on 0861 999 919 or by sending an SMS to 47919.
