The Alex Magistrates’ Court has remanded a 27-year-old man in custody pending further investigations for a case of culpable homicide.

Alex police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Manare Ramotshela, said the man was arrested following the death of his three-year-old daughter shortly after her arrival at Alex Clinic.

Ramotshela said the man and his wife took the child to the clinic. The man is said to have claimed that the child had swallowed water while bathing in a tub and he had hauled her out when she was struggling to breathe.

Ramotshela said police called the clinic for an inquest after the child died and discovered that she had a blue left eye and bruises on her back, indicating the possible use of force prior to her death.

The man will reappear in court after investigations are concluded. The child’s mother was not charged.
