Gauteng FC could go all the way, says coach

One of the most feared teams in the U20 age division of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association league, Gauteng FC could go all the way and defend the Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) trophy.

Gauteng FC was crowned champions of the 2014 edition of the tournament in their age group after demolishing ‘everyone and everything’ before them. The enterprising team is doing it again in the 2015 edition of the Map Games.

The team recently walloped Alex Young Lions 4-0 to reach the semifinals of the tournament at No 3 Square Grounds. They are the only winners of the trophy in the various age groups to have survived this far.

In the U13 group, champions Real Madrid were eliminated in the last 16 rounds of the tournament held two weeks back, while Super Stars, champions of the 2014 edition in the U15s, were beaten 3-4 by Pamo United, with all goals coming in the second half.

In the U17 division, Malandela Mighty Heroes recently eclipsed defending champions Rainbow Stars 4-3 in a thrilling game at the Altrek Stadium in Eastbank. Both teams scored in the second half.

Gauteng FC coach Sihle Ngcobo said he was optimistic that his side will defend its crown.

“I have held sessions with the players to impress upon them the importance of defending the crown and they fully understand it,” he said.

Ngcobo said the team was on a roll, winning with no less than four goals in each of the matches they played. Unfortunately, Ngcobo said, two of his defenders, who are the pillars of the team at the back, were red-carded in the quarterfinal and will not be available for the semis.

“I hope to make some adjustments to the team for the semifinal game this coming weekend and I am confident we’re still going to make it through to the finals,” Ngcobo said.
