Man gets five years for attempted truck theft

ALEXANDRA - A man claiming to be from Alex and Diepsloot has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempted motor vehicle theft.

A man who has been in police custody since November last year for attempted motor vehicle theft was recently sentenced to five years in prison.

Enerst Nerves, who claimed to be from Alexandra and later Diepsloot, was sentenced by the Alex Magistrates’ Court.

Nerves told the court that he had been hired by two men to drive a truck from Alexandra to a plot in Kyalami at midnight on 16 November last year. Apparently the truck belonged to Nerves’ brother who hadn’t given him permission to take it.

On arrival at the plot, the two men allegedly started fiddling with another truck on the property which they intended to steal.

This alerted a security guard who called for backup. When the other guards arrived, they only found Nerves who couldn’t explain why he was there. The guards detained him in their car, and while they searched the property, they heard Nerves’ truck driving off. They pursued it until it disappeared into Diepsloot.

The guards returned and took Nerves to Alex Police Station for further investigations.

The other two men remain at large.
