Alexandra taxi association denies bullying tactics

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) has denied bullying motorists by stopping them and ordering their passengers to alight and board taxis.

The Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) has denied bullying motorists by stopping them and ordering their passengers to get out of the cars and board taxis.

A spokesperson for ATA who requested anonymity, said they were not aware of any of their members who engaged in this act. The association, however, said they were aware of reports that a group of men who attended the court case of the suspected murderers of Mozambican national, Emmnauel Sithole had stopped cars and ordered passengers to board taxis.

The spokesperson was reacting to an Alex News Facebook post which claimed members of ATA had engaged in these bullying tactics.

The post claimed that taxi drivers told motorists that their vehicles should only carry the driver and a husband or wife, and no one else. Any other passengers were ordered to get out and board taxis at the nearby Pan Africa Mall taxi rank.

The furious motorist who posted the comment questioned the right of taxi drivers to stop motorists and order their passengers to get out of the vehicle. “They have overstepped their boundaries and this could lead to chaos, as my car is my car and the number of people in it is my business, period,” wrote the fuming motorist.

The ATA spokesperson responded by saying, “We condemn this type of behaviour as it creates tension and is a breeding ground for unnecessary violence, as motorists may not obey the commands [of taxi drivers] and violence may erupt. We don’t take too kindly to people using the ATA name to commit crimes.”
