Union of Jewish Women holds AGM

HOUGHTON - The Union of Jewish Women hosted its 83rd annual general meeting on 13 May at the Union of Jewish Women’s (UJW) offices in Oak Street.

Chairperson Diane Levine gave a comprehensive record of the successes of the past year around UJW’s ongoing projects which included the projects done in Alexandra.

These projects including the Alexandra Aftercare, the Alexandra Feeding Scheme and support of three impoverished creches, which are an intrinsic part of the ongoing work of UJW.

Members of Badiredi women’s organisation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in 3rd Avenue, Alexandra, whom the Union of Jewish Women has partnered up with in doing these projects, as well as staff and volunteers from the aftercare attended the annual general meeting as well.

Bringing greetings from the South African Zionist Federation was Reeva Forman, who said, “The UJW fulfills so many mitzvoth (commandments) by welcoming the strangers into their tent,” referring to the outreach work done by the UJW.

And on behalf of all the women’s organisations, Women’s International Zionist Organisation’s Andrea Wainer congratulated the UJW on its achievements, while guest speaker, Judge Sharise Weiner, gave a fascinating talk on xenophobia and the Jewish experience.
