An animal cruelty case has been opened at Alex Police Station following the confiscation of a badly injured dog in Tsutsumani.

The Sandton SPCA’s Candice Scorer said on 13 May their inspector was called to fetch an unwanted dog, but to his horror, he discovered a badly injured dog with a deep gash in its neck after being tied up with wire.

The maltreated dog, estimated to be around two years old, was found with wire wound around its neck and embedded deep in its skin.

Scorer said the dog was extremely aggressive, a result of the unimaginable pain it was experiencing. This made it difficult for the inspector to safely capture the dog and remove it from the premises, Scorer said. “Once at the SPCA, our part-time vet was rushed in to assess this poor animal with its injuries and remove the wire after heavily sedating the dog,” she said.

“What was found was that the wire had been around the dog’s neck for a long period of time. The wire had grown into the skin and flesh of the dog’s neck and had begun to disintegrate inside the flesh.

“Our vet and her team used heavy-duty wire cutters to remove the wire, cleaned and sterilised the area in and around the wound, and administered antibiotics. Due to the nature of the wound and its infection, it cannot be immediately repaired and the dog will remain in our care for 24-hour treatment with our team, and hopefully make a full recovery,” Scorer said.

The inspectorate has compiled a case against the owners and will be moving to charge them in terms of the animal protection act, Scorer added.

What sort of sentence do you think should be given to the owners of this dog?
