Olive Tree Theatre play off to Zim

ALEXANDRA - A play performed by an Olive Tree Theatre actor received commendations which will see it feature in the region – and hopefully abroad.

The play was performed at the Wushini International Community Festival last week in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal under the theme Africa Without Borders. The event coincided with Africa Month celebrations.

The play, Fresh Footprints, is drawn from a script by world renowned writer and poet Mongale Serote. It is about the pitfalls a North West Province migrant woman faces after chasing the illusionary life of glamour, fame and fortune in the city which leads to a tragic life.

Theatre director Ntsieng Mokgoro said the organisers and critics of the festival –which featured productions from Netherlands, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and included well-known musicians from KwaZulu-Natal, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg – rated the play highly.

“It attracted an invitation to Ithwasa Festival in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe for later in the year and there are talks to get it featured at the Soweto Theatre,” she said.

Mokgoro said the festival was also an opportunity to network in a bid to take the play overseas.

She added that the theatre, which started a couple of years ago, is becoming the venue of choice for artists, poets, musicians and arts and culture programmes focusing on schools.

“We hosted a festival for Maskandi [Zulu] music last week and will host children and high school arts festivals annually,” she said.

The theatre also conducts various daily and weekend art programmes for the youth.
