The future of SA comedy

SOWETO – It’s sure to be a laugh a minute as a new batch of hilarious hopeful comedians compete in the annual Savanna Newcomer Showcase.

South Africa’s top up-and-coming comedians will battle it out on stage in order to be nominated for this year’s Savanna Newcomer Award. Twenty hopefuls will have only five minutes to perform a hilarious stand-up comedy set and win the crowd and the industries favour. There will also be rib-tickling jokes from previous Savanna Newcomer Award winners Loyiso Madinga (last year), Schalk Bezuidenhout (2013), Dillan Oliphant (2012) and Deep Fried Man (2011).

For the first time ever, those attending the showcase will be able to vote for their favourite comedian on the night. The public votes will be tallied alongside the industries votes and the best newcomer will be announced at the 5th Annual South African Comic’s Choice Awards (Savanna CCA’s) on 15 August at the Teatro at Montecasino.

The Savanna CCA is celebrating its 5th birthday year and is inviting the public to arrive at the Newcomers Showcase early and have a celebratory drink with the comedians and celebrities. There will be a funky pre-show party complete with music by Kaya FM DJs, complimentary drinks and snacks and a chance to rub shoulders with the future of South African stand-up comedy.

Catch the Savanna Newcomer Showcase at the Soweto Theatre on 31 May. Doors open at 2pm for the pre-show party and the showcase kicks off at 4.30pm. Tickets are R70 and include the pre-party, with a complimentary Savanna on arrival.
