Premier hails arrest of xeno murderers

JOBURG - Gauteng premier David Makhura has commended the police for their swift arrest of four suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole in Alexandra.

Yesterday, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini announced that Alexandra police made a breakthrough in the murder by arresting three suspects, and a manhunt for the fourth suspect was continuing.

The suspects were arrested in Alexandra with the help of the community. Dlamini said several exhibits that may be used as evidence were seized during the arrests.

This morning he revealed that the fourth suspect was arrested last night.

Dlamini said, “All suspects alleged to have been involved in the killing of a Mozambican national are due to appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court today on charges of murder.” He said police had been working around the clock to make sure that the suspected killers were brought to book.

Since the outbreak of the xenophobic violence, 154 people have been arrested in the province.

Meanwhile, Makhura expressed appreciation for all the anti-xenophobia campaigns and positive messages from society, community leaders, faith-based organisations and the media. He also commended the work of the police in condemning and fighting these inhumane acts.

“We encourage the police and other law enforcement agencies to continue working round the clock to protect both foreign nationals and citizens and to arrest those breaking the law,” said Makhura.

The premier said the attacks violated all the values that South Africa embodies, especially the respect for human life, human rights, human dignity and Ubuntu.

This week the provincial government will embark on a series of engagements with various community leaders, including the hostel dweller leadership. Makhura said government also supported efforts by various groups aimed at mobilising South Africans to reject xenophobia in all its manifestations.

On 23 April, the provincial government will join a march organised by Peoples Coalition Against Xenophobia and Friends Assembles at 1pm at Peter Roos Park on Empire Road on Constitution Hill.
