Malajila to ‘fight to the end’ for top award

JOBURG - Mamelodi Sundowns' Zimbabwean striker Cuthbert Malajila has his eye set on the leading goal scorer award and has vowed to fight to the end to win it.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Zimbabwean striker Cuthbert Malajila has his eye set on the leading goal scorer award in the Absa Premiership soccer league.

Malajila and Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane were named Absa Premiership Player and Coach respectively for February and March. They each received R5 000 and a trophy.

Accepting the award, Mosimane said he hoped to guide his team to the final of the Nedbank Cup. Winning the cup would give Sundowns entry into the Confederation of African Football Champions League next season.

“We would like to return to Caf Champions League football again as we have ambitions in that sphere to conquer the continent of Africa,” said Mosiname. “We were just marginally beaten a few weeks ago by a seasoned campaigner in this league in TP Mazembe, but I would like to see ourselves return much quicker than the previous spell of seven years,” he said.

For his part, Malajila said he would dedicate the award to his teammates and the whole Sundowns family, without which he would not have won the award. He said he would continue to work hard to win the leading goal scorer award which eluded him last season after being pipped by Kaizer Chiefs’ Bernard Parker.

“All my teammates are behind me and rooting for me to work hard and win the top goal scorer award. I will fight to the end to win it.”
