Moral regeneration proposed for communities

ALEXANDRA - A ward committee member and chairperson of the Alex Residents Association has urged for the establishment of moral regeneration structures at community level to help restore morality and values in the township.

The chairperson of the Alex Civic Association, Mike Beea urged for the establishment of moral regeneration structures at community level to help restore morality in the township.

This after the recent discovery of foetuses on an Alex street. “This is not new,” he said referring to the gruesome find. “Many serious things reflective of moral decay and lack of social conscience occur daily and have been normalised.

“This has rubbed on to our children who are desensitised from the negative impact of crime and murders they witness through corpses lying on the streets, from teenage pregnancies they witness from many classmates in schools, and substance abuse they see daily in colleagues who drop out of school due to nyaope addiction.”

Beea blames society’s indifference to social problems which are exacerbated by lack of institutional leadership, family unity and moral values, and also the misinterpretation of democracy which is distorted to mean freedom to do whatever one pleased.

He said there had not been adequate education about the Constitution which essence was rights, equality and access. “The rights should be promoted in equal measure with responsibilities, to ensure a balance and to create awareness that rights did not replace but reinforced moral values, respect and obligations to others’ security, dignity and life.”

Beea added that the lack of constitutional knowledge caused confusion which was taken advantage of by those with criminal and subverted intentions. “They [criminals] use this to exploit, especially children, leading to teenage pregnancies, fathers abandoning children, high rates of HIV infections, children roaming the streets unsupervised, and mushrooming of taverns and shebeens in every street where crimes are arranged and murders committed.”

Beea believes the proposed regeneration structures will be a platform to get people talking and to realising that many have similar concerns about the moral decay decimating society.
