Developing black cricketers

ALEXANDRA - The inaugural Lets Play Walter Masimula U15 cricket knockout tournament, which is building bridges for the emergence of black cricketers, took place at the Alexandra Cricket Oval on 25 March.

The inaugural Lets Play Walter Masimula U15 cricket knockout tournament, which is building bridges for the emergence of black cricketers, took place at the Alexandra Cricket Oval.

The tournament involved four townships Dobsonville, Kagiso, Soweto and Alexandra which play an integral role in the development of black cricketers. The tournament is named after the legendary Walter Masimula, who was one of the best black cricketers this country has ever produced.

The founder of the tournament and Masimula’s brother, Elite Mabhena said, ”I knew Bra Walter as a role model, a father and a brother. My dream would be to see one of the players from these townships playing at the highest level, which is the Proteas. This game can teach you a lot of things, it’s a character building game.”

Masimula’s uncle Philly Mathebula said, “I am so happy, it’s a dream come true. Thanks to Supersport for sponsoring this, and not only for Walter but for the kids.”

Gordon Templeton, a Gauteng Cricket Board member spoke about the development of black cricketers in townships. “It all depends on the quality of opportunities, given quality opportunities this game will prosper,” he said. “The sooner we get administrators that fully understand what the needs of a disadvantaged child are, only then we will see an influx of black cricketers playing at the highest level.”

In the final of the tournament between Dobsonville and Soweto Cricket Club, the match could not be completed due to rain so the trophy was shared between the two teams.
