Principal is on cloud nine

ALEXANDRA - KwaBhekilanga High School principal Jubera Selowa is on cloud nine.

KwaBhekilanga High School principal Jubera Selowa is on cloud nine.

This is because his school has managed to maintain the top spot for the second year running in the matric pass rate among the five high schools in Alexandra and the delighted Selowa attributed this achievement to a partnership created between the teachers, pupils and parents and the dedication shown by all.

This partnership allowed pupils to come to school after hours, weekends and on holidays to study and also enabled the parents to supervise the studying of their children at home in the evenings, Selowa said.

He attributed the slight drop of 3,5 percent in the overall pass rate of the school from 97 percent in 2013 to 94 percent last year to the introduction of the new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (Caps).

“At the beginning, Caps was a bit of a challenge for the teachers and pupils as they grappled to adjust to the requirements but as the year progressed, they managed to overcome that challenge,” Selowa said.

KwaBhekilanga had 119 pupils that sat for their matric examinations and out of that number, 112 passed and only seven failed. The school had a total of 19 distinctions, with 42 percent of the matric candidates obtaining bachelors and 42,9 percent obtaining diplomas, while 15 percent got National Higher Certificates.

The star performer for KwaBhekilang was Andile Nkabinde who sat for the examinations at 17 years old and only turned 18 a few days ago. Nkabinde raked home four distinctions.

Eastbank High School on the other hand had 261 pupils who sat for the examinations. Out of this 178 passed, 79 failed and four had incomplete results, which the authorities said could mean that the candidates did not complete all their examination papers. The school had 46 bachelors, 74 diplomas and 58 National High Certificates.
