Screws tightened against crime in Alexandra

ALEXANDRA - The MEC for Community Safety has tightened the screws against criminals in an endeavour to eradicate the fear gripping Alexandra residents from freely moving in their neighbourhood.

The MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane has tightened the screws against criminals in Alexandra by announcing new security measures.

Nkosi-Malobane a native of the sprawling and densely populated township said as in shopping malls, residents also needed improved protection through available state resources whenever crime increased.

Malobane announced the measures at the Eastbank Hall during the Alexandra Policing Cluster meeting of the police, Metro police, community policing forums, residents and local organisations. The cluster comprises Alexandra, Bramley, Sandton, Midrand and Sandringham police stations.

She said the meeting was an opportunity for residents and the police to develop trustworthy partnerships which would encourage the public’s confidence to report crime without fear of reprisals from criminals who allegedly were in cahoots with some in the police.

She added that this would be achieved through increased police visibility and issued instructions for their immediate deployment to known hotspots such as Vincent Tshabalala and Lenin roads, Tsutsumani, Ext 7 and Marlboro Gautrain station.

The Metro police were also instructed to enforce bylaws transgressed by taverns and shebeens. This she said included noise pollution, urinating on neighbours walls and contravening age limits for alcohol consumption.

“Tavern owners aught to respect others’ rights to privacy, especially for school children who need a quite environment for their studies and exam preparations, and also for working mothers who need good a sleep before going to work in the mornings,” she concluded.

  1. it’s no point in doing such meeting/conferences/programmes of safety whilist our police-men will not neccessarily care and take into account the safety of others in the community because bona themselves are protected by the law and their 9mm pistol firearms and some have rifles in their homes and with them 24/7.
