Iphutheng’s soccer gems on display at MEC Cup

ALEXANDRA - Participants schools of the forthcoming Gauteng MEC Soccer Games have been warned to up their game when Iphutheng Primary School's own 'Lionel Messi' walks onto the pitch.

Participant schools of the forthcoming Gauteng MEC Soccer Games have been warned to up their game when Iphutheng Primary School’s own ‘Lionel Messi’ walks onto the pitch.

Joseph Maphuruma, nicknamed ‘Messi’ for his ball control and dribbling skills just like his Argentinean and Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, has been a revelation for the Iphutheng football team which has conquered all other schools in Alexandra and the [Gauteng Department of Education’s] Johannesburg East District to become the champions.

The team will participate in the Gauteng MEC Soccer Games to be held in Pretoria on 20 December. “Maphuruma, along with his teammate and captain, Tebatso Sekoaleng [nicknamed Phungwayo], have been a pillar of strength in the successes of the school soccer team.

“Both players, together with their teammates, are responsible for the success we have been enjoying off late in the soccer field. I am proud of the work done by all my players and hope they will continue to do well and even go further to win the MEC Cup,” said soccer coach and school sport co-ordinator Lota Kekana.
