Sanral dismisses retrenchment claims
JOBURG - Sanral has dismissed claims that it is retrenching its employees, stating that no retrenchment letters have been issued.
The roads agency described the allegations made by Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) Gauteng secretary Dumisani Dakile as mischievous.
“It is very mischievous of Cosatu to claim that the SA National Roads Agency Limited is retrenching 1 200 workers when we only have a staff complement of 283,” the roads agency’s spokesperson Vusi Mona said.
Mona added the roads agency’s service provider, the Electronic Toll Company (ETC), was downscaling its operations in line with its business model.
“Sanral cannot be held accountable for the business decisions made by its service providers,” said Mona.
“It is regrettable that in its opposition to e-tolling, the federation is misleading the public. Even opponents are expected to stick to certain minimum standards of truth,” said Mona.
Dakile claimed the e-tolling system was facing a crisis because many workers were being retrenched by the agencies and labour brokers used by the roads agency.
“We have confirmed more than 1 200 employees have been retrenched at Sanral. As we speak, many of the workers now at Sanral have received retrenchment notices,” Dakile was reported saying.
Dakile was speaking during a media briefing outlining protest action against e-tolling.
The protest would start at Cosatu House in Braamfontein, Joburg, and would make its way to the SA National Roads Agency Limited’s (Sanral) offices in Pretoria.
A protest would also start in Hatfield, Pretoria.
“We are going to hand over a memorandum to the Sanral offices… including burning of the e-tags and the bills, which had been received by our people,” Dakile said.
